Grosses in Virginia

The counties in south central Virginia was home to several Gross families during the late 1700's and early 1800's.  This area included the counties of Pittsylvania and Bedford.  The majority of these Grosses appear to have been the descendants of Solomon Gross with the exception of a few other Grosses, including the Richard Gross line and an Isaac Gross that both appeared in Pittsylvania County.   Although it had been previously thought that Richard may have been from the Solomon Gross line, there has been no evidence to verify this.  There is evidence however, that Richard most likely was related to the Isaac Gross that was living in Pittsylvania Co. and that they were probably father and son.   Until further research can be done and all of the evidence can be examined the possibility of some sort of family connection to the Solomon line cannot be ruled out.

Richard Gross Sr. of Pittsylvania Co., VA

Excerpt "The Edmund Gross Family of Southeastern KY" @ 2002

 by Jerry Taylor

Richard Gross, Sr. was born between 1740 and 1750 and his wife, Elizabeth was born between 1740 and 1750.  The first recorded document of Richard found in the court orders was dated in August of 1790, wherein Richard Gross was the plaintiff, against Elisha Walker, defendant.  The jurors found Elisha Walker had not paid the debt to Richard Gross in the declaration mentioned and awarded Richard Gross the 200 pounds owed on debt, plus his cost for the suit and expenses, which are to be discharged by the payment of 100 pounds with interest paid per annum from 25 Dec. 1787.[i]

The next record from September of 1802 was a deed wherein Richard Gross and his wife Elizabeth, while living along the Bannister River, possibly on Sandy Creek in Pittsylvania County, in the amount of 72 pounds current money, Richard Gross sold to Samuel Fuqua three Negroes named Let, Stephen and Polly.  In case of death or failure in any of the above Negroes, Jude and Nancy will replace them.  In conjunction with this sale, Samuel Fuqua entered security for a Delivery Bond in Consequence of an Execution, Davis Bailey, plaintiff against Richard Gross, defendant.  This shall stand as long as Fuqua stands his security for this case, or until the debt has been abolished.[ii]  At no other time was Richard listed as owning slaves.

In July of 1806, an indenture was made between Richard Gross and John Chalmers & wife Sarah of Halifax Co. wherein they sold to Richard Gross Sr. of Pittsylvania County for 65 pounds a tract of land consisting of 240 acres lying on the headwaters of the Banister River in Pittsylvania Co., surveyed by Robert Williams.  Nathaniel Williams had conveyed this land previously to John Chalmers and wife by a deed.  Key boundary notes: “starting at Devins Corner Pointers on the Courthouse Road,” traveling a line south and west “to pointers in William Devins line.”[iii]  At some point Richard had put this land up, along with three barren cows and nine head of sheep, for collateral to secure a debt owed to Samuel M. Lovell and in April of 1821 after paying off the debt Lovell, instructed the court to release the land and personal property back to Richard Gross.[iv]

One year later on April 27, 1822, Richard sold this land to, Elizabeth, Mekey and Emily Gross for the sum of $1500.00.[v] In June of 1824, all of the afore mentioned, were listed in an indenture together which stated: Richard Gross Sr., Mekey Gross, Elizabeth Gross & Emily Gross of the 1st part, Achilles H. Moorman trustee of the 2nd part & Jaby Smith of the 3rd part.  All of the Grosses were indebted to Jaby Smith for $74.84 by a bond due 1 Feb. 1826.  Moorman, for the sum of $1.00 paid the Grosses for 4 beds & furniture, 2 chest, 2 cows & calves, 7 hogs, 1 table, 2 pots, 1 oven, 1 skillet, 9 pewter plates, 1 pewter dish, 2 Wheels, 1 loom, 1 Wheel, 7 chairs and 2 bee stands.  “This indenture in ownership upon Trust and special confidence that in the event the said Richard, Mekey, Elizabeth and Emily Gross fails to pay to said Jaby Smith the said sum of money on before the 1st day of January 1825 then and in that case the said Achilles H. Moorman Trustee as aforesaid shall at the request of the said Richard Mekey, Elizabeth and Emily Gross and Jaby Smith or either of them proceed to sell at the residence of the said Richard, Mekey, Elizabeth and Emily Gross after having given ten days previous notice thereof by way of advertisement at divers public places in the county of Pittsylvania the above mentioned property at public auction for ready money and out of the proceeds of such sale pay to the said Jaby Smith the sum of  $74.84 and the interest which may have occurred therein”[vi]

Richard Gross, Sr. purchased other tracts of land in Pittsylvania County.  In 1813, Richard bought fifty acres and a water gristmill lying on the Bannister River for $300.00 from Robert Adams.[vii]  This appeared to be the same land that two years later in October of 1815, Richard and his wife Elizabeth, sold to Robert Pierce.  This land was listed as containing 50 acres on the Bannister River, known as the Mill Tract.  The purchase price was 60 pounds.[viii]  A note of interest in this case was Elizabeth Gross was examined privately to fully explain to her the deed and afterwards Elizabeth acknowledged the deed to be her act and declared that she willingly signed it.  At the time, the deed was taken into the clerk’s office to be certified, it stated that Elizabeth relinquishes her “Dower” in and to the lands conveyed by this indenture.

There were two other times that Richard sold land that he owned.  The first of these two deeds listed was an indenture between Richard Gross, Sr. & wife Elizabeth to William C. Biggers on October 15, 1821 for the sum of $30.00 wherein Richard and Elizabeth sold to William C. Biggers 15 acres of land bounded by the Lynchburg Road.[ix]  The second was an indenture between Richard Gross and Robert Cook & Josiah Ferguson, for the sum of $100.00 paid to Richard Gross for a tract of land lying in Pittsylvania Co. on the Timber Fork of White Thorn Creek containing 150 acres.  This land began at the Lynchburg Road.[x]  This was the same land conveyed to Richard by John Medkiff Jr. (no deed found on this but lawsuit Medkiff Jr. vs. Richard Gross dated 23 Nov. 1820, Bk. 21, P. 272 & Bk. 22, P. 45)

There were many cases involving Richard Gross, Sr. in the Pittsylvania County Court Orders.  One case of special interest was in 1807[xi] wherein Richard Gross was charged with assault and battery against Joseph Hubbard.  The jury could not reach a verdict and it was retried on March 23, 1808,[xii] and at that time Richard lost and had to pay one penny in damages.   What makes this case so interesting was just three days earlier on March 10, 1808, Edmund Gross was listed as the plaintiff against Joseph Hubbard.  In this case, Edmund won and was awarded one penny in damages and his cost for the suit.[xiii]  This was the only time Edmund was ever mentioned in the court records.

Another court order of interest was in 1810 where Richard Gross “paid the tax imposed by law; a license was granted him to keep an ordinary at his house in this county from this time the 1st day of May.  Whereupon, the aforesaid Richard Gross, with Thomas Blakely, his security interest, into and acknowledged their bond according to law.”  An ordinary was a place that served meals at regular times, at a set price.

Richard Gross, Sr. died in 1833.  On May 21 of that year, it was ordered by the court “Richard Gross, having departed this life and Elizabeth his widow, waving her right of administration there on and no person applying therefore, the estate of said decedent, be committed to the hand of Robert Harrison, Sheriff of this county of administration.”  No record of his wife Elizabeth was found after that time.[xiv]

Children of Richard and Elizabeth Gross

 I.  William Gross was born between 1774 and 1794.[xv]  More than likely, he was born around 1788, which would have made him twenty years of age at the time of his marriage on February 22, 1808, to Maryan Foust in Pittsylvania County.  William can be found living in Pittsylvania County in 1810 and 1820.  From the 1820 census William and Mary are listed as having three males, two of which were born 1810-1820, one born 1804-1810; also four females, his wife Mary born 1774-1794 and three other females, probably daughters, two born 1804-1810 and one born 1810-1820.  There is a possibility there were several more children. Two children who were definitely known, were their sons Jonathan, born circa 1808[xvi] and Allen, born in 1810.[xvii] Other children believed to be theirs are: Raleigh, born 1820,[xviii] Harvy, born 1824,[xix] Letitia (Tishie), William and David.  By 1830, William is apparently deceased, as he was no longer found in any census.  Mary Gross was found as head of household living in Giles County, Virginia.  The children of William and Mary were found living in Tazewell County, Giles County, Raleigh County and Buchanan County, Virginia. At some point, the children and grandchildren of William changed the spelling of their surname from Gross to Grose, which remains to this day in William’s branch of the Gross family.

Children of William Gross and Mary Foust

A.  Jonathan Gross, b. 1809 and died between 1860 and 1870.
He  married Elizabeth Lambert (b. 1804 on 30 Nov. 1831 in  Giles Co., Va.

B.  Allen Gross, b. 1810 and died between 1870 and  1880  in Buchanon Co., VA.  He married   three  times. His first marriage was to Martha Lambert (b. 809, d. 1836) in 1835 Giles Co., his   second married was to Elizabeth Fry (b. 1810, d. before 1862)  in 1837 Giles Co..  Allen's third marriage  was to  Rebecca Mosely (b. 1844)  in 1862 Tazewell Co., VA.

C.  David Gross, listed in 1840 Tazewell but possibly deceased  by  1850.

D.  Female 1804-1810

 E.  Female 1804-1810

F.  Raleigh Gross was born in 1820.  He lived in Tazewell Co.  until the 1860 census and then  appeared in Buchanan  Co.  He died sometime between 1860 and 1868.  Raleigh  married  Wilmouth Terry, 18 Aug. 1837 Tazewell Co., daughter of Joseph and Lucinda Terry of Pittsylvlania Co.

G.  William Gross, b. 1820, married Nancy Louderback?, 15 Apr.  1846 Tazewell Co.

I.  Harvy Gross, b. 1824, d. 19 Mar 1895 Raleigh Co., VA., married Matilda Ann Lambert Martin, 12 Jan 1845 Tazewell  Co.

II.  Edmund Gross was born in 1792.  There were only three known records of Edmund in Pittsylvania County.  The first two, were the 1810 tax list and the 1808 court orders, which have been previously mentioned.  The third record was a marriage dated July 15, 1812 in Pittsylvania County to Elizabeth Napier.  In the pension file of Edmund he stated that he had not been previously married, so it is not known if this is his marriage or not.  If it was, she may have been deceased before his enlistment in the war.

III. Richard Gross, Jr. was born circa 1794.  The 1830 census gives his range of birth between 1750 and 1760, but this is probably and error since his year of marriage was not until 1814, which makes 1794 a closer estimation.  Richard first appeared in the 1810 tax list of Pittsylvania County.  He then married Peggy Daniel on April 29, 1814.  Two years later in 1816, there was an indenture between Richard Gross Jr. of Pittsylvania Co. and Richard Daniel of Charlotte Co., wherein Richard Gross Jr. bought a tract of land for the sum of $25.00, containing 100 acres from Richard Daniel, lying in Pittsylvania Co., on the Sandy River.  The land had been conveyed to Richard and Margaret Daniel by Jacob Aaron.[xx]  There is a possibility that this may have been the parents of Richard’s wife.  By 1820 Richard had moved from Pittsylvania County and was living in Rockingham County, North Carolina as noted in an indenture wherein he sold the land he had previously purchased from Richard Daniel  to Sanders Warren for 4500 pounds of tobacco.[xxi]  By 1830, Richard and his wife had returned to Pittsylvania County, but no record has been found of him since that time. Richard and his brother William were listed together three times in the Pittsylvania County Court Orders.  All three times, they were listed as the defendants.  The first two cases were listed on the same date in 1811.  These cases were Ingram Banks verses William and Richard and James Batte verses William and Richard.  Then in 1815, there was a case of Robert Biggers verses William and Richard.  These were the only cases that William was involved in, but Richard is listed many more times.  There are currently no known children of Richard and Peggy.  The only census he was found in only list him and his wife.

IV. Emily Gross was born in 1790.  She possibly had several children, but only two are known, Louisa Gross, born 1835 and James Gross, born 1837.

V.  Mekey (Mickey, Micky, Mica) Gross was born in 1800.  Mekey only had one known child, Cornelia, born 1832.  There were possibly more.

VI. Elizabeth Gross was most likely born circa 1802.  This is an estimation determined by the date of her first appearance in the court orders.

Emily, Mekey and Elizabeth Gross

Emily, Mekey and Elizabeth Gross appear to of had a strong bond with each other that remained throughout their entire life.  From 1822 to 1838, these women appear together several times in the deed books. On many occasions, Richard Gross, Sr. is listed with them.  The first of these deeds was the land that they purchased from Richard in April 1822.  Within a few days of this transaction, Emily, Mekey and Elizabeth borrowed $240.97 from Jaby Smith.  For collateral they put up the land they had purchased from Richard, and four feather beds and furniture, 1 yoke oxen, seven head of cattle, three head of sheep and their household and kitchen furniture.  In November of that same year the three women sold to James Hodges, 152 acres lying on the head branches of the Bannister River.  This land is stated as being the land that Richard Gross is currently living on.  Two years later, in 1824, Richard Sr., Emily, Elizabeth and Mekey, put their land up for collateral again to Jaby Smith, who they were indebt to.  This time a reference was made that if the debt was not paid, the property would be sold at the “residence of Richard, Emily, Mekey and Elizabeth.”  This statement, along with the information given in the other transactions, gives compelling evidence that these four individuals were of the same family and shows proof that all of them, at one point, were living on the same property.  In addition, from information in census records, Emily and Mekey, remained living together throughout their lives.  No marriage record has been found for either woman, but they did have children, as indicated in the census.  There is a marriage listed for an Elizabeth Gross, on August 20, 1853 to John Smith.  Records show her as having at least one child, William Thomas Gross, before her marriage.  In December 1855, there was a guardian qualified for him.[xxii]  Later, in 1857, the court ordered the guardian to record the account of William Thomas Gross, infant son of Elizabeth Smith, Formerly Elizabeth Gross.[xxiii]  In August 1867 there was a suit brought by William T. Gross against Elisha F. Keen guardian.[xxiv]  It is not known if this is the same Elizabeth that was the sister to Emily and Mekey.  It is possible, because of dates involved, that this may have been a younger Elizabeth and a daughter to one of the three women.

Isaac Gross of Pittsylvania Co. VA

Isaac Gross has currently been found listed in Pittsylvania County only twice.  The first was circa 1767, when he was listed in Richard B. Beck's Militia Unit of Pittsylvania Co. and as owning 400 acres on Sandy River.  By 1770 a Richard Gross is listed as owning the same 400 acres.  This in conjunction with court records placing Isaac as still living in Pittsylvania Co. during 1786 is compelling evidence that there was a strong family connection between these two men, possibly even father and son.  The court record dated 15 Apr. 1786 is a power of attorney that "Isaac Gross of Pittsylvania Co." gives his lawyers to recover any land or property from Anthony Asher of Baltimore Co., Maryland that may be owed to him.   Anthony Asher was the administrator of Isaac's fathers estate.  Isaac was the son of Jacob and Sarah Gross, who in 1720 bought 150 acres on Chestnut Neck in Baltimore Co., MD from Francis Dallahide.  On 9 Nov 1728, Jacob died and Sarah relinquished her right to administer the estate.  In 1734, Isaac and his sister, Rosanna were granted a quitclaim on the accounts of Anthony Asher.  In that same year, Isaac sold the 150 acres on Chestnut Neck.
The children of Jacob and Sarah were:
Sarah, born 15 Feb. 1703
Rachel, born 15 Feb. 1708
Isaac, born 18 Jan. 1712
Rosanna, married 14 Feb. 1732 John Hand/Stand or Stanston
It is not known when Isaac left Baltimore Co. Md and arrived in Pittsylvania Co. or his reasoning for doing so.  No record of Isaac has been found after the 1786 court record.

Descendants of Solomon Gross

Solomon and Joanna Gross had two sons, Jacob and Edmund.  In the early 1700's this family lived in the New Kent Co. area of Virginia until traveling inland.  Edmund settled for a time on Grosses Creek in current Prince Edward Co. before moving onto Cub Creek in what is now Charlotte Co.  Edmund's children eventually split into two geographic groups, one staying in Virginia and the other moving temporarily to Anson Co., NC before moving on to Screvan Co., GA.    Jacob and his family moved to Goose Creek in current Bedford Co.  temporarily until he eventually moved to Peak Creek in current Pulaski Co.  Jacob remained there until his death around 1781.  Shortly before or after his death, Jacob's sons moved back to Bedford Co.
