Note from FTDNA: "It is obvious from our observation of 10's of 1000's of samples that some markers change or mutate at a faster rate than others. Therefore not all markers should be treated the same for evaluation purposes.

Comparison of Results 

J1 Haplogroup:  Note: FTDNA did not add the J1 Haplogroup to their panel until the Fall of 2006.  Prior to that time, members who had the SNP test were listed as only J.  Since the inclusion of J1, all members of this group who have had the Backbone SNP test were confirmed as J1.  Also, when the initial results are returned they are listed as J as well.  The reason being that FTDNA cannot confirm them as J1 with 100% accuracy without the backbone test.  Starting with batch 187, FTDNA will automatically do the backbone test at no charge.

All but one member of this group share a common ancestor as proved by DNA testing.  This group consist of five Brock branches who are descendants of Jesse Brock (born 1751 VA); James Brock (born 1759 VA); Jeremiah Brock (born 1814 KY); Jehu Brock (born 1787 VA) and Elder George Brock (born 1809 TN).  Prior to the DNA test results there was no suspected relationship between Jeremiah, Elder George and Jehu Brock descendants with the lines of Jesse & James Brock descendants, who are believed to be brothers. 

37587, 97459 & 60788 - are a 67/67 match and represent the medium of the group. They are very tightly related.
41783 - closest match of 66/67 with the mediums of the group and are tightly related.

91801 - closest match of 66/67 with the mediums are are tightly related.

34687 - closest match of 65/67 with 91801 and are tightly related; 2nd closest match 64/67 with the mediums of the group and are related.

41683, 34687, 37587, 60788, 63448, 91801 & 100584 have each had the 67 marker upgrade which proved the sharing of a common ancestor between them.

34687, 37587, 100584  & 34687 are descendants of Jesse Brock, born 1751 VA.

63448 is a descendant of James Brock b. 1759 VA and thought to be the brother of Jesse Brock.

60788 is a descendant of Capt. John Brock, born 1728 VA.

91801 is the descendant of Levander Goff, born 1854 TN and who was adopted.

R1b1b2 Haplogroup

Group 1

34465. & 42678 - These two participants have a genetic distance of one.  The mismatch occurred on markers 389-1 & 389-2.  Marker 389 is a special marker in that there are two copies of it on the 10^th marker and 12^th marker.  FTDNA does not have a test to look at the second copy by itself, but there is a test which looks at the sum of the two copies together.  That is the 12^th marker.  If a mutation increases the 10^th marker value by one step, it will also increase the 12^th marker value by one step because the value for the 10^th marker is included in the second.  Since there is no mutation in the second copy of the marker, only in the first, it is counted as a genetic distance of 1.  Although both participants claim George Brock as their ancestor, further testing needs to be done to substantiate a relationship.

Group 2

148850: Closest match to another member 123922 is an 66/67 match and are tightly related.

49545 & 123922 are a 36/37 match and have a 94.15% probability they shared a common ancestor within 12 generations. 

31577 has a 24/25 match with 49545 & 123922. Their only mismatched marker was  464b, which is a fast moving marker.  The probability of these three being related is high.   

Group 3 (Individual: no matches within the project)

148922: With the closest genetic distance to another member being a distance of 16, these participants are not related.

30339: With the closest genetic distance to another member 107211 of 21/37.  These participants are totally unrelated  

N8638: With the closest genetic distance to another member 80665 being 10/12 match, although still possible, this match is to far off to be considered related. 

27159: With the closest genetic distance to another member 34465, 49545 & 107211 being 19/25, these participants are totally unrelated. No matches between this participant to other project members were expected as they are not a direct line Brock surnamed male.

38869: With the closest genetic distance to another member N11627 of 18/25 these participants are not related.

80665: With the closest genetic distance to another member 101844 19/25 these participants are not related..

101844: With the closest genetic distance to another member N11627 24/37 these participants are not related.

107211: With the closest genetic distance to another member being 24/37 these participants are not related.  The possibility exist that this members lineage should follow the Sneed/Snead line.

N53138: With the closest genetic distance to other members being 7/12 these participants are not related.

N69900: Closest match to another member 107211 is 8/12, these participants are not related.

I Haplogroup

17006: No matches were found between other project members.  17006 is a descendant of Jesse Brock of Harlan Co., KY, but not a Brock surnamed male and as such was not expected to match other project members. 17006 shows one 2 step mutation match in comparing 12 markers in the REO (Recent Ethnic Origin) database with an individual of Native American origin.  This participant has also had a DNA print which showed 3% Native American ancestry. 

113158: Has no matches within the project.

87724: Has no matches within the project.

Haplogroup Definitions

J1 - Found at highest frequencies in Middle Eastern and north African populations where it most likely evolved. This marker has been carried by Middle Eastern traders into Europe, central Asia, India, and Pakistan. The Cohen modal lineage is found in Haplogroup J.  While the J haplogroup is found in Jewish populations, not all individuals with haplogroup J are Jewish in origin.  Haplogroup J, containing both Jews and other Middle Eastern individuals, was spread around the Mediterranean by a trade business, probably propelled by the Phoenician traders.  Individuals then spread into other regions of Europe. In order to determine that a person has Jewish origins we would have to see most or all of the exact matches showing Jewish roots. (See comparison between Cohen modal and members of this group)

J2 - This lineage originated in the northern portion of the Fertile Crescent where it later spread throughout central Asia, the Mediterranean, and south into India. As with other populations with Mediterranean ancestry this lineage is found within Jewish populations.

I, I1, and I1a - are nearly completely restricted to northwestern Europe. These would most likely have been common within Viking populations. One lineage of this group extends down into central Europe.  Sometimes referred to as the "Viking" haplotype, found in Scandinavia and parts of Ireland, Scotland, and England, where it's thought to denote descent from the Viking invaders of England, Scotland and Ireland. 

I1c -  lineage likely has its roots in northern France. Today it is found most frequently within Viking / Scandinavian populations in Northwest Europe and extends at low frequencies into Central and Eastern Europe.

R1a1  - The R1a lineage is believed to have originated in the Eurasian Steppes north of the Black & Caspian Seas. This lineage is thought to descend from a population of the Kurgan culture, known for the domestication of the horse (circa 3000 B.C.E.). These people were also believed to be the first speakers of the Indo-European language group. This lineage is found in central & western Asia, India, and in Slavic populations of Europe.

R1b1  - Haplogroup R1b is the most common haplogroup in European populations. It is believed to have expanded throughout Europe as humans re-colonized after the last glacial maximum 10-12 thousand years ago. This lineage is also the haplogroup containing the Atlantic modal haplotype.
