MSNBC: DNA takes on a family’s mysteries

Currently we have a total of 74 participants, with 67 kits returned.   Each participants results are posted on either the Y-DNA or mtDNA results page, along with their earliest known ancestor which has been supplied by the participant. Pedigree's are a very important part of this project!  Each participant is asked to supply their pedigree back to their earliest known ancestor.  The pedigree's are used to find the most recent common ancestor once matches have been made.

About the Brock DNA Project

The purpose of this project is to determine the existence of common ancestors among the various Brock lines, along with their ethnic and geographic origins, and to match these Brock lines with documented Brock families.

As this is a surname project, the main participants will be taking the Y-DNA test and must be males carrying the Brock surname.  The Y-DNA (Y-Chromosome) test, which is only found in males, is passed from father to son, and remains nearly unchanged through the generations. A male Brock of today will carry an almost exact match of the Y-Chromosome his great-grandfather from many generations back carried.  As such, by then comparing each participants genetic markers we can then determine if they share a common ancestor.

  • A single test allows you to verify:

    • if 2 males share a common ancestor

    • your suggested geographic origins

    • if you are of Native American ancestry through your ancient ancestor

    • your deep ancestral ethnic origins

As results come in they are then posted on the Brock DNA Project Results Page grouped by their Haplogroups. As matches are formed, we can then compare their lineage with other participants, which will assist in determining who their common ancestor was.

How to Join the Brock DNA Project

Persons wishing to join the Brock DNA Project, can do so at the following link Join the Brock DNA Project.  At the time you sign up, please send the Project Administrator your lineage to your earliest known Brock ancestor. This is a requirement in being part of the project and necessary in finding common ancestors among project participants. The first person in your lineage would be yourself (or your male relative for a female contributor), then your father, his father, and so on as far back as your paper trail goes.  For mtDNA testing, this would be the female line.  Please supply the locations where your earliest Brock lived, the name of his spouse if known, and his birth and death dates. If you need assistance with your lineage please contact the administrator.

Cost and Collecting your DNA

Members receive a reduced group discount and may choose either the 12-Marker, 25-Marker, 37-Marker or higher test. The decision on which test to take depends on your budget considerations.  We recommend members take the 25 marker test.  We have found that matches made at the 12 marker level can be lost on the Y-DNA25 or higher test.  When comparing your results to others who you have a match or close match to, the more Markers you have the more information will be available to confirm matches.  Also, when comparing your markers against others that you match or are a close match to, more Markers will shorten the estimated time frame to the shared common ancestor.

Y-DNA12    $99

Y-DNA25  $148

Y-DNA37  $189

Y-DNA67  $269

If you wish to upgrade your test at a later date you can do so without resubmitting another sample.

Y-DNA Refine 12 to 25   $49
Y-DNA Refine 12 to 37   $99
Y-DNA Refine 12 to 67 $189
Y-DNA Refine 25 to 37   $49
Y-DNA Refine 25 to 67 $148
Y-DNA Refine 37 to 67   $99

Collecting your DNA consist of a simple cheek scraping and can be accomplished in a matter of minutes. The test kit comes with two cheek scrapers and two collection tubes (for one person) and instructions for collecting your DNA. Using the cheek scraper gives the same sensation as brushing the inside of your cheek with a soft toothbrush.  Once your sample has been returned to FTDNA it takes 4 - 6 weeks for results to be returned.

Brock DNA Test Results

The results from a Y-DNA test consist of a string of numbers called Markers.  The Markers tested are from the Y chromosome which is passed from father to son.  Participants results will either match or be a close match to others who they share a common ancestor with.  In that those who match will have the same test results, no information that is unique to individuals tested is provided.

As test results become available, they will be posted on this website.  The names of those tested will remain confidential (see below).  As the results are posted, so will each participants pedigree chart, beginning with the 3rd generation back to their earliest known ancestor.

Confidentiality

As a project member, DNA results and identifying information will be received by the Project Administrators.  Each member will be assigned an identification number. This number will be the only identifying information anyone else sees. No one other than the coordinators will know who participates, or which results belong to whom.

Contribution Fund

Family Tree DNA has set up a Contribution Fund wherein donations can be made for specific Surname Projects.  As a contributor, individuals can donate any amount they wish to the Brock DNA project.  If you desire your donation to be for a  specific person or branch of Brocks it can be reserved for persons meeting those requirements.  To make a contribution Click here

Brock DNA Mailing List

The Brock DNA mailing list has been established for the discussion of all aspects of Brock DNA such as announcements, test results and the genealogies involved.  Sign up here......

mtDNA Testing

Many members of the Brock DNA project have expressed an interest in mtDNA testing.  Anyone wishing to take the mtDNA test is welcome to do so.  To learn more about some of the mtDNA testing interest Click here
