John & Elizabeth Brock are suspected to be
the parents of Jeremiah, George, Margaret Anna, Elizabeth, Harrison, Micajah and
Washington Brock. Finding evidence to determine the parentage of these Brocks
has been extremely difficult, making it necessary to rely heavily on
circumstantial evidence. Some of these Brocks can be found in a few records in
Casey Co.,
Kentucky
from 1838 to 1842. Later records indicate that some of them were located
in neighboring Adair County. In 1844 a small portion of
Casey
County was cutoff and included in
Adair
County,
which may be the reason for the shift of records into Adair.
The main piece of evidence in attaching
Jeremiah, Washington, Harrison and Elizabeth Brock together is their marriages
to Giles siblings, children of Elijah Giles wife Susannah Hardin (Mary Ann
Giles married Jeremiah Brock, 1836 Madison Co.; William Giles married Elizabeth
Brock, 1842 Adair Co.; Nancy Giles married Harrison Brock, 1845 Adair Co.;
Vianna Giles married Washington Brock, 1855 Rockcastle Co.). It is
with the marriage of Elizabeth Brock that her father is listed as John Brock,
along with Elijah Giles as the father of William Giles. Other evidence for
a John Brock as father is the land grants found in
Casey
County. Two of these grants connect John and George Brock to each other.
The third grant is for Elijah Giles, wherein Jeremiah Brock is listed as part of
the survey team. These grants give evidence of John Brock, George Brock,
Jeremiah Brock and Elijah Giles all living in Casey County during the same time
frame.
In searching the census for a John Brock
only two census have been located that may be this family. The first is
the 1840 Adair County where a John Brock and family is listed on page 21, on
page 22 is a Jeremiah Brock family. There is also a John Brock living in
1850 Pulaski Co., KY, which is just a short distance from Adair Co.
(Household # 663, John Brock, age 71, TN; Elizabeth Brock, age 68, TN;
Harrison
Brock, age 26, TN).
The Harrison Brock listed, would be of the appropriate age to be the Harrison
who married Nancy Giles and the suspected son of the John Brock in question.
Harrison and Nancy had married in 1845 Adair, however, in the 1850 census Nancy
is living in the home of her parents.

was Micajah BROCK.
Notes: Obituary contributed by Lori Williams:
The Lexington Herald, Monday, March 13, 1905, p. 1 col. 7 DISTRESSING
Circumstances Attending Suicide of Macajah Brock. Friend Writes of the Dead.
Macajah Brock, seventy-nine years, committed suicide by firing a bullet into his
brain Wednesday morning, March 8th, shortly after 10 o'clock, and expired an
hour later. The family, consisting of Mr. Brock, wife, daughter Frankie, and son
William, have been living in the Baptist parsonage at East Hickman Church for
about a year. Recently, the church called a pastor and the family were notified
to move. Mr. Brock, being in declining health, became depressed over the
prospective change. Tuesday, some members or deacons of the church called at the
home and proceeded to measure for carpets and so forth for the new pastor. This
lack of respect greatly humiliated the elder Brock, who had just paid his rent
for three months as required of him . On the morning of the tragedy, the four
members were seated around the table partaking of a meal as the son and daughter
were preparing to go to town with produce, and return in time for the evening
meal. The father, who had been quite feeble for some years, ate sparingly, and
the daughter, who was devoted to him, asked if she should not prepare him an
egg. He replied that he wished she would. She did, and he ate it with quite a
relish. While thus seated, they discussed the plans for moving, and the manner
in which the churchmen had treated them upon the previous. Mr. Brock arose from
the table and remarked, "It makes but little difference, as I have little longer
to live," paused at the water bench, took a few drops of water and entered into
an adjoining room; when a few seconds later, the report of a pistol was heard.
His wife and children rushed into the room and found him lying half upon the bed
with a death wound back of his ear. He expired an hour later. The deceased was
born in Casey county March 8, 1826. He was twice married. By his first marriage,
he had two sons, both of which are dead. By his last union, there were eight
children, five of whom are living, a son and two daughters having died after
reaching manhood and womanhood. His children are: Mrs. Richard Hieber, of
Pisgah; Mrs. Darnell of Fayette; Mrs. William Perkins, of Woodford county; Miss
Frankie Brock, who resided with her parents; Robert Brock of East Third street;
and grandson, William, who lived with him and was in the house when the tragedy
occurred. Death is sad enough, when, from natural causes, a husband and father
is snatched form the bosom of his family, but under these distressing
circumstances, how deplorable! When one who has toiled and struggled until near
the when man must be reason of nature lay down his life's burden "ere many snows
spread their white mantel ore hill and dale," is driven to desperation by being
humbled and humiliated though lack of more spirit of godliness; we pause any
query, is there any good thing under the sun? The deceased was a kind, devoted
husband and father, a good neighbor, always willing to do a kind act when able;
a veteran of the Mexican war, an honest and hard working, upright citizen. His
death is deeply regretted by family and friends. The family have the sympathy of
the entire community.

Notes: A marriage for a Washington Brock to
Elizabeth Wilson is recorded in the Russell County Marriage Book 1-37 Page 43.
Some researchers believe this is the same Washington Brock in question and give
evidence of the 1850 Casey County census where a Washington Brock, age 20, is
enumerated there on August 15th. Listed in his household is an Elizabeth Wilson,
age 19 and a James Wilson, age 3 months. Some believe to further support this
claim is the 1860 Madison County census wherein a James Brock, age 10, is listed
in the home of Irvine Brock, nephew of Washington. However, this James is most
likely the son of Micajah Brock and Patsy Luttrell. There are two pieces of
evidence to counteract this claim. One is the pension file of Washington Brock,
wherein he lists his wives and no marriage to Elizabeth Wilson is mentioned.
Secondly is the 1850 Russell County census, where on the 18th of August an
Elizabeth Brock, age 19 and child Samuel Brock, age 3 months, is listed in the
home of a James Wilson and family. This could possibly be the same Elizabeth
Wilson who married a Washington Brock and is now living in the home of her
parents. With the information available we do not believe there is enough
evidence to support the claim of Elizabeth Wilson as the first wife of
Washington Brock and as such have not included it. It is possible that the 1850
is the right Washington Brock, but that he was not married to the Elizabeth
Wilson in his household. This could be supported by the listing of Elizabeth and
James with the surname of Wilson.
